The modernity of the nineteen-thirties

For the Augustapolder, Bouwfonds, in co-operation with the Municipality of Bergen op Zoom, designed the De Zuidelijke Stadsrand development plan.  In the sub-area of De Markiezaten, on which 900 homes could be built, areas were assigned for four exceptional residential complexes. These complexes would have to be an exception to the predominant pattern of residential streets with ground-based dwellings. These exceptional buildings would be mainly located close to the open water or have a view of the polder. For one of these special locations, we designed an apartment block that forms an entrance to the new housing estate. A splendid view through a transparent opening allows all the residents to enjoy the polder panorama. The neighbourhood would have to have a nineteen-thirties look, while the special elements designed by us would have to radiate the modernity of the thirties. We think we succeeded.
