De Hondsberg

2003, Oisterwijk

a new villa with integrated features in parkland

In a parkland setting on the river Dommel on the outskirts of Oisterwijk there was a villa dating from the beginning of the twentieth century. This housed an observation centre for children up to the age of eighteen years with psychiatric or behavioural problems. In the nineteen-sixties, an emergency building was added for day-treatment and temporary accommodation for the children.

After more than forty years, we designed a new replacement building in the form of a new villa in the park complex. In order to not allow this complex to get too big, features such as the restaurant and swimming pool were integrated into the park landscape and covered with green roofs. This was a very challenging environment for the children.
