Villa de Wijer

1997, Roermond

a home that should not stand out, still stands out

The Odekerken family – father, mother and three growing sons – wanted to move from the village to the city of Roermond. In the De Wijer residential area in Roermond Noord there were still a few plots available alongside a small stream. The neighbourhood is notable for its wide diversity of architecture. The client wanted an unobtrusive home that would not communicate directly with its immediate surroundings but would focus entirely on the stream behind it. A U-shaped building volume with an open side facing the stream gives the home its required maximum privacy.

In the interior and the patio, there is an extravert use of colour. Strong colours – red and cobalt blue – appear to run outside. These bold colours earned the home the Nationale Schilderprijs (National Painters’ Prize) in 1999. A home that should not stand out, still stands out.
